Portland United Soccer League
Organization:
The league has been organized and established as non-profit by two lifetime soccer players who are passionate about the sport and dedicated to giving something back to the Portland community. We will be working in close cooperation with Aserella Maine, a non-profit group that has been active for social justice in the greater Portland area for many years.
Depending on the level of sponsorship support, sales during events, donations, and the number of teams who register, we would like to be able to participate in the following programs:
A partial scholarship for the top scholar / athlete of the season who is dedicated to a course of collegiate study with redeeming social value.
A donation to Aserella Maine to support its projects both in the greater Portland area and for its humanitarian efforts abroad.
Securing resources for the league’s next season.
Normal league play will allow each team at least one game every week from the end of May until the end of August. Each game will be officiated by a FIFA certified referee and the rules of fair play and sportsmanship will be strictly enforced. Games will be played mainly on the Fox St. field, with some possibly on the Back Bay field as well. The season will end in a tournament with one team gaining the title of Portland United League Championship.
Additionally, we would like to organize two, mid-season tournaments – one on Father’s Day, and another on the Fourth of July, where a couple of teams will be invited from out-of-state to participate. At these events we hope to have live music, food, and presentations.

2008 PUSL Champions: Deportivo Guatemala
The biggest Rivalry this season between Deportivo Guatemala and Banadir Stars ended by decision neither one of the teams expected. Deportivo Guatemala defeated the Banadir Stars in what many may call the last straw in the globally beloved" Futboll". Banadir Stars is lead by Coach Aweis Abdalla, a native of Somalia, and Deportivo Guatemala is lead by Captain Endy Chinchilla of Guatemala. Both coaches are resident of our great state of Maine.
The first 45 minutes of the match ended at a 1-1 tie. Banadir Stars took the lead at 55 minute, an upsetting goal that shocked the whole Deportivo Guatemala fans. Guatemala tied the game 20 minutes later when a Guatemala forward eluded his marker inside the box and sent the ball into the back of the net. The game ended tied at 2 a piece after the 90 minutes regular. The championship was determined by penalty after neither team failed to score in the 20 minutes extra time. Deportivo Guatemala won the PUSL league by converting 4 out of their 5 penalty kicks while Banadir Stars converted 2 out of 5.
Congratulations to the skillful and passionate Deportivo Guatemala team and the finalist Banadir Stars, a team that has always approach the game with pure class and hard-work.
